Caruso’s Grocery, situated in Pike and Rose and its inaugural Capitol Hill location, recently earned a spot on Washingtonian Magazine’s ‘Best Service Restaurants’ list according to the readers’ poll.
Nestled at 11820 Trade St. in Montgomery County, the restaurant occupies the dining room space previously housing Owen’s Ordinary and currently hosting the rebranded Owen’s Tavern and Beer Garden in Pike & Rose. Described as having a generous, friendly vibe, these Little Italy-inspired establishments have garnered acclaim.
A year ago, the restaurant underwent a rebranding from Owen’s Ordinary, with the bar and patio transforming into Owen’s Tavern and Beer Garden, while the dining room adopted the identity of Caruso’s Grocery. Both Caruso’s and Owen’s are under the operation of the Neighborhood Restaurant Group. Chef Matt Adler explained that Owen’s dining room wasn’t as busy as the bar and patio, prompting the decision to repurpose the underutilized space.
Caruso’s Grocery made its debut at The Roost food hall in Capitol Hill DC in May 2021. The restaurant, modeled after the classic Italian-American ‘red sauce joint,’ focuses on traditional fare with an emphasis on execution and high-quality ingredients. The menu features classics such as Chicken Parmesan, Penne alla Vodka, Mozzarella en Carozza, Sole Francaise, Garlic Bread with Four Cheese Sauce, and other old-school favorites. Caruso’s Grocery is a joint venture by Neighborhood Restaurant Group and Partner Matthew Adler.
