California Tortilla Closes After a Decade

California Tortilla has permanently closed one of its Gaithersburg locations. A sign posted at the restaurant, located at 255 Spectrum Ave in the Spectrum Town Center, announced that it officially closed its doors on Wednesday, November 27th.

The Gaithersburg location had a successful ten-year run, opening in December 2014. California Tortilla, which launched its first restaurant in August 1995 on Cordell Avenue in Bethesda, currently operates nearly 50 locations throughout the DC Metro area. Its headquarters are also based in Montgomery County, in Potomac. The sign on the door states:

We will be permanently closing at the end of the day on Wednesday, November 27th. We sincerely appreciate your patronage over the past ten years and are fortunate enough to call many of you friends. We hope you understand that we will be slowly running out of certain items over the next several days and some flexibility on orders might be necessary. We will do our best to accommodate you with our remaining inventory. We wish you all of you and your family a happy Thanksgiving and a wonderful holiday season.

Sincerely, the team at California Tortilla Paramount

Despite this closure, California Tortilla continues to expand. Earlier this year, the company announced a new Montgomery County location slated for early 2025. The franchise group behind this project includes Erin Bila, a former employee at the Olney location, her husband Rogerio, and a business partner. While the exact address has not been disclosed, the new restaurant is expected to open somewhere between Chevy Chase and Gaithersburg, likely along Rockville Pike.

California Tortilla also has broader plans for growth, aiming to open 100 new locations over the next five years. The expansion will focus on areas surrounding Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and the Eastern seaboard.
