Classic Bakery Plans to Open Third Location in 2025

Back in May, we shared that Classic Bakery will be opening its third location at 18195 Village Center Dr. in Olney, adding to its existing stores in Gaithersburg and Tyson’s Corner. This new location will take over the space previously occupied by Cold Stone, which is relocating within the shopping center. Classic Bakery has indicated they hope to open mid to late quarter 1 (2025), with a tentative target date of March 1st, though this is subject to change.

The family business was founded more than half a century ago by Grandpa Souren, who discovered his passion for baking in 1947 at the age of 17 in Tehran, Iran. He left his job as a machine mechanic to focus on his small bakery. His oldest son, Rubic, started helping at the bakery when he was just seven years old, doing everything from sweeping the floors to mixing large batches by hand—learning the business from the ground up.

After immigrating to the United States, Rubic Movsessian and Grandpa Souren opened Classic Bakery in Gaithersburg in 1991, at its original location in a shopping center that was once home to Hechinger’s and is now home to Bruster’s Ice Cream.

The bakery quickly gained a reputation for combining a rich family baking tradition with exceptional customer service. Classic Bakery became known for crafting beautiful, made-from-scratch baked goods using only the freshest, highest-quality ingredients. Today, the business is run by Rubic Movsessian and his son Areen, the third generation of Movsessians involved in the bakery. Due to popular demand, the menu has expanded to include sandwiches, imported coffee, and homemade gelato, in addition to the variety of cookies, pastries, baked goods, and custom cakes that have made Classic Bakery a local favorite.

A few years ago, Classic Bakery opened a second location in Tyson’s Corner, VA, and moved its original 3,000-square-foot location to a larger, state-of-the-art 10,000-square-foot production facility on Gaither Road to meet growing demand. Areen understands that to continue winning the hearts of local customers, he must maintain the same hands-on approach that Grandpa Souren and Rubic used when the bakery first opened in 1991. Grandpa Souren’s recipes and high standards are still carried on by Areen and the entire Classic Bakery family.
