In September, we reported that Hard Times Cafe, located at 1117 Nelson St in Rockville, had temporarily closed due to plumbing issues.
In November, a representative from Hard Times provided an update, stating that the restaurant was actively working with the landlord to resolve the issues. Once an agreement was reached and approved, construction work was set to commence.
As per the latest information from Hard Times, construction has indeed started, and the restaurant anticipates reopening in the coming weeks. If a more precise timeframe for reopening becomes available, an updated schedule will be provided.
Known for its signature chili, Hard Times offers various styles, including Texas, Cincinnati, Terlingua, and vegetarian options. The menu features enticing items such as the Chili Bubba (chili over cornbread), Chili Mac (over spaghetti), Frito Chili Mac, chili dogs, chili burgers, and chili fries. The restaurant also caters to non-chili preferences with dishes like salads, wraps, and chicken tenders.
Describing its ambiance, the Hard Times Cafes aim to evoke the atmosphere of a southern depression-era chili parlor. The design incorporates polished red oak and terra-cotta tile, with sand-textured walls adorned with photographs depicting day-to-day western life circa 1930. The first Hard Times Cafe opened in Alexandria, VA, in 1980, followed by the Rockville location in 1984. While there was previously a Hard Times Cafe in Germantown (13032 Middlebrook Rd), it closed in 2014. Additional Hard Times locations can be found in Alexandria, Fredericksburg, and Springfield, VA.
