In May, we shared the exciting news that Classic Bakery would be opening a new location at 18195 Village Center Dr. in Olney, marking the bakery’s third overall, with other locations in Gaithersburg and Tyson’s Corner. The new spot will be taking over the space previously occupied by Cold Stone, which is relocating within the shopping center. Demolition has already begun, and construction is on the way.
Classic Bakery has informed us that they are targeting a mid-to-late first-quarter opening in 2025, with a tentative date of March 1st—though this is subject to change. Delevano Design Build recently posted photos of the demolition process, and interior construction is expected to start soon (see photos below).
Founded over 50 years ago by Grandpa Souren, the family business began when he discovered his passion for baking in 1947 at the age of 17 in Tehran, Iran. After leaving his job as a machine mechanic, he pursued his dream and opened a small bakery. His oldest son, Rubic, began working at the family business at just seven years old, learning the craft from the ground up, from sweeping floors to mixing large batches by hand.
After immigrating to the U.S., Rubic Movsessian and Grandpa Souren opened Classic Bakery in 1991 in Gaithersburg at the shopping center that once housed Hechinger’s and now features Bruster’s Ice Cream.
Classic Bakery quickly earned a reputation for blending a rich family baking tradition with outstanding customer service, offering expertly crafted baked goods made from scratch with the highest quality ingredients. Today, the bakery is run by Rubic and his son Areen, the third generation of Movsessians in the business. In addition to their famous cookies, pastries, and custom cakes, Classic Bakery now serves sandwiches, imported coffee, and homemade gelato to meet growing demand.
A few years ago, Classic Bakery expanded by opening a second location in Tyson’s Corner, VA, and moved its original 3,000-square-foot bakery to a spacious, 10,000-square-foot state-of-the-art production facility on Gaither Road. As Areen takes the reins, he remains committed to maintaining the hands-on approach that Grandpa Souren and Rubic used when they first opened the bakery in 1991. Areen, along with the entire Classic Bakery family, continues to uphold Grandpa Souren’s recipes and high standards to ensure their legacy lives on.
