Chris Zhu, the owner of beloved dim sum eateries China Garden in Rockville and Han Palace in Tysons, Woodley Park, and Barracks Row, unveiled plans for a new dining venture at Rio. This establishment is set to occupy the former Union Jack’s space, vacated in June 2020.
Subsequently confirmed by Rio, the forthcoming restaurant will be named Han Spot. Construction commenced several months ago, with the previous interior stripped away to make room for the new establishment. Currently, the focus lies on constructing the fresh, revamped space.
Zhu took to social media in May to share the exciting news: “Another milestone. New baby from Han Palace coming to Rio Gaithersburg. Next to AMC theater & Guapo’s.” Renowned for its all-day dim sum offerings, Han Palace tantalizes diners with a delectable array of dishes such as scallops, shrimp, pork/crab dumplings, rice rolls, barbecue pork buns, lobster sticky rice, Han-style filet mignon, and Peking duck.
While an exact opening date remains undetermined, it’s anticipated that Han Spot will welcome patrons in mid to late 2024. In the meantime, patrons can peruse the menu from Han Palace to whet their appetites for what’s to come.
