Sad News: The last remaining location of the historic Maryland restaurant, Pizza Oven, has announced its permanent closure at the end of this year.
In a social media post on Tuesday, December 19th, Pizza Oven shared the news that it will cease operations permanently on December 31st. The restaurant, situated at 6029 66th Street in Riverdale (Prince George’s County), has held its place since September 1957 and is a notable pioneer of Maryland Style Pizza.
Owned and operated by Takoma Park native Brian Boileau, Pizza Oven has been a cherished establishment with its flagship location in Riverdale Park, serving customers for over 66 years. Brian Boileau, who opened the first location in 1957, is set to retire at the end of the year. Throughout the years, Pizza Oven expanded with several locations, including in Montgomery County and as far as the eastern shore.
The restaurant’s unique décor includes walls adorned with an eclectic mix of ties and baseball caps donated by customers. It has collected hats from every state in the nation and records of customers from every country in the world except one. Autographed pictures of sports legends like Cal Ripken and Joe Namath further contribute to the restaurant’s ambiance. Instead of placemats, the staff laminates the day’s newspaper, providing diners with something to read while enjoying their meals.
The farewell message on the restaurant’s website reads, “It’s official, Mr. Brian is retiring, and Pizza Oven is coming to an end. December 31st will be the last day. We are hosting Mr. Brian’s birthday all weekend and will conclude with a car show December 31st from 9 am -12 pm. We thank you for your years of patronage!”
