The iconic Pizza Oven restaurant, located at 6029 66th Street in Riverdale (Prince George’s County), has reopened under new ownership just days after announcing its seemingly permanent closure. The restaurant, known for being a pioneer of Maryland Style Pizza, has been at the same location since September 1957.
In December, a statement was released announcing the retirement of the 90-year-old owner, Takoma Park native Brian Boileau, and the closure of the restaurant. Boileau opened the flagship location in Riverdale Park in 1957 and had several locations over the years, including in Montgomery County and on the eastern shore. The Riverdale location remained the constant, operating for over 66 years.
Although the restaurant closed on December 31st with a celebration of its last days and a packed house, a surprise announcement on January 2nd stated, “Pizza Oven is now open under new ownership. Same recipes, same employees!” While many are excited about the restaurant continuing to operate, some patrons felt a sense of deception after believing they had visited the restaurant for the last time on December 31st.
Despite the mixed emotions, the reopening means the iconic Pizza Oven will carry on, maintaining the same recipes and retaining existing employees, albeit without founder Brian Boileau. This development allows Boileau to enjoy his retirement, and fans of the restaurant can continue to savor its long-standing culinary offerings.
