Mackie’s Barbecue is officially open at 5500 Olney Laytonsville Rd in Olney, taking over the former Umberto’s location. The restaurant is currently in its soft opening phase, offering a limited menu for dine-in, takeout, and delivery through platforms like DoorDash, Ubereats, and GrubHub. With a unique beer cave reminiscent of those found in Shoppers grocery stores, Mackie’s also boasts a wall of retail wine featuring local vendors. Soon to come is an extensive selection of beer and wine.
According to Mr. MoCo, who provided a first look at the establishment, Mackie’s plans to undergo a three-phase transformation. In Phase II, the outdoor patio behind the restaurant will be demolished and replaced with an improved version featuring a full outdoor bar, additional seating, two mobile smokers on-site, and 12-15 fire pits for year-round enjoyment. Phase III will include the addition of pickleball courts on the connected property.
In terms of the menu, Mr. MoCo recommends the pulled pork sandwich, which he described as “absolutely amazing.” He praised the mac n cheese and coleslaw, and highlighted the daily-made alcohol-infused desserts, with options like cakes infused with Patrón Silver Tequila and Amaretto.
As Mackie’s Barbecue continues to evolve, it aims to become a distinctive destination in the Olney area.
