Today’s weather serves as a gentle nudge that spring is on its way. And for many who hail from MoCo, March 17th holds another significance: the grand reopening of Jimmie Cone for the season. Nestled in Damascus since 1962, Jimmie Cone has been delighting locals with its soft serve ice cream and frozen yogurt, marking this year as its impressive 62nd season.
What sets Jimmie Cone’s soft serve apart and keeps customers coming back for more might just be its rich composition, boasting a creamy 10 percent butterfat content—roughly double that found in soft serve from giants like McDonald’s and Dairy Queen. Warm days often see the Damascus location bustling with cars, forming queues that, despite their length, tend to move swiftly.
In 1990, owners Dan and Bonnie Leiter took the reins from Bill and Dorothy Harris, the son and daughter-in-law of the original proprietor. Seven years later, in 1997, Jimmie Cone expanded its reach with a second location in nearby Mount Airy. This newer outpost boasts a slightly larger footprint compared to the original. Both establishments, situated at 26420 Ridge Road in Damascus and 1312 S Main Street in Mt Airy, ensure a daily rotation of classic chocolate, vanilla, and twist flavors. Additionally, they tantalize taste buds with weekly variations such as Strawberry, Black Raspberry, and Orange, which can also be enjoyed twisted with vanilla. For those watching their waistlines, rotating selections of frozen yogurt are on offer, including one fat-free and one fat and sugar-free option.
