Eater DC has unveiled its list of “Hottest New Brunches to Try Around D.C.,” featuring primarily Washington, D.C. establishments with just one standout from Maryland: San Pancho Burritos. This new spot, located at 7056 Carroll Ave in Takoma Park, has quickly made a name for itself.
San Pancho Burritos has been warmly received since its recent opening. The restaurant experienced such high demand that it had to close early on Monday after selling out of its signature Sonoran-style tortillas. It reopened on Wednesday morning at 8 a.m., just in time to serve breakfast burritos. The breakfast menu is available on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and on weekends from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Eater DC notes, “After a breakfast taco craze swept through the D.C. area, the Californian co-owners of Cielo Rojo are ushering in the age of breakfast burritos. The Mission District-styled snacks sold out during the shop’s opening weekend after running out of its signature Sonoran-style tortillas. Breakfast burritos include chorizo, barbacoa, and vegan options that diners can ‘make super,’ adding guacamole and sour cream. Round out your brunch with aguas frescas or horchata incorporated into cold brew and lattes.”
Owners David Perez and Carolina McCandless, who met in 2012 at Gracias Madre, a vegan Mexican restaurant in San Francisco, opened Cielo Rojo in Takoma Park in 2019. They recently expanded to a larger location and are now bringing their take on San Francisco Mission-style burritos to Montgomery County. A “Mission-style” burrito, originating in the Mission District of San Francisco in the 1960s, is characterized by its large size and the inclusion of rice and various other ingredients. This style gained nationwide popularity when major chains like Chipotle and Qdoba began offering their versions.
