Starting December 10, DC-area residents will have the chance to savor tacos from Mexico City’s renowned Taquería El Califa de León at Tacombi’s Arlington and Bethesda locations for a limited two-week period.

Tacombi has teamed up with El Califa de León, the world’s first Michelin-starred taquería, to bring its celebrated flavors to the DMV. Founded in 1968, the family-owned El Califa de León earned its Michelin star in the guide’s inaugural Mexico rankings, with just four standout menu items.

The collaboration kicks off on December 10 with a special pop-up at Tacombi’s Bethesda location (4749 Bethesda Ave). Guests can enjoy an authentic taco stand experience featuring all four of El Califa de León’s award-winning tacos for one night only. The following evening, December 11, the pop-up moves to Tacombi’s Arlington location (1550 Crystal Dr). After these launch events, a selection of El Califa’s tacos will be available at both locations from December 12 to December 26.

The idea for this partnership began during a trip to Mexico City, where El Califa de León’s owner, Mario Hernandez Alonso, and Tacombi founder, Dario Wolos, envisioned bringing their passion for tacos to a broader audience. “We are honored to partner with El Califa de León and share their tradition with our guests across Tacombi,” Wolos said.

At the December 11 pop-up, guests can indulge in El Califa de León’s signature tacos—Bisteck, Costilla, Gaonera, and Chuleta—along with two of the taquería’s renowned salsas, prepared and served by Mario himself. Tacombi has partnered with Pat LaFrieda for premium cuts of meat, while fresh tortillas will be made on-site using Tacombi’s proprietary Vista Hermosa brand. After the pop-up events, taco enthusiasts can continue enjoying El Califa’s offerings at Tacombi’s Arlington and Bethesda locations for a limited time.
