Since opening in 2019, Pumpernickel & Rye in Urbana has become a go-to spot for deli enthusiasts in Frederick County. This innovative deli offers a fresh take on classic favorites, featuring house-made pastrami, roast beef brisket, smoked turkey, and more. Recently, it has come under the ownership of Montgomery County’s Jonny Allen, the founder of Pizza CS and CSNY Pizza (1020 Rockville Pike).
Pumpernickel & Rye was originally founded by sisters Amy Nesbit and Megan Hook. When Nesbit relocated to Los Angeles, Allen saw it as an opportunity to step in and take the business in a new direction. Megan Hook, who also calls Montgomery County home, remains involved in the deli’s operations. The market and deli emphasize sustainable practices, locally sourced ingredients, and offer Brooklyn-sourced kosher bagels. The menu features a variety of options, including sandwiches, salads, and all-day breakfast.
Allen shared that he began to feel a sense of fulfillment with CSNY’s success and saw this as the perfect moment to explore new ventures in the culinary world. “I wanted to challenge myself and create something that brings a new twist to the deli experience,” he said. “Pumpernickel & Rye is that opportunity.”
